Elderly woman in Penang found abused in flat

BUTTERWORTH: A 64-year-old woman was found abused at her flat in Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

The victim, who was staying with her two children and daughter-in-law, was injured in the head and had bruises all over her body.

Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said police received a call at around 1pm on Wednesday (March 13), saying that the victim could not get out of her house to receive treatment at the hospital.

It is believed that the family was poor and stressed due to family issues, and they were severely lacking in food as well.

According to the victim, her injuries were because she fell down. She denied that her children abused her.

ACP Nik Ros Azhan said initial investigations revealed that the victim’s children could be mentally ill.

Her two children and her disabled daughter-in-law lived in a flat, and they received Zakat and aid from the Social Welfare Department (JKM).

A representative from JKM said the hospital would be conducting psychiatric treatment to the victim and her children.

The victim was treated at Hospital Bukit Mertajam, and initial medical reports found that the victim had mental illness and a history of depression.

The case is being investigated for causing hurt under Section 324 of the Penal Code.
