Three dead, nine injured in two road accidents in Sarawak

SIBU: Three people died and nine were seriously injured in two road accidents on Monday (Feb 25).

In the first accident at 5.30am, a 40-year oil palm estate worker was killed in a hit-and-run at KM6 of the Bintulu-Miri Road.

Bintulu police traffic chief Insp Jeffery Jembol said based on a screengrab from a CCTV in the area, the victim was walking along the road when he suddenly collapsed.

"Just then two vehicles passing by ran over him. Both vehicles fled after the accident," he said.

Supt Jeffery asked the public to contact him at 013-894 1151 should they have witnessed the accident.

In another case, the driver and passenger of a four-wheel drive died when their vehicle collided head-on with another four-wheel drive at 2.07pm Monday at Mile 19 Bintulu-Miri Road.

Sarawak Traffic police chief Supt. Alexon Naga Chabu said nine passengers from both vehicles were also seriously injured due to the strong impact of the collision.

The dead were identified as 27-year-old Mary Umut and 30-year-old Indonesian Draman Seman.

"The investigation revealed that the driver had lost control of his vehicle which swerved to the other side of the road and crashed head-on with another four-wheel drive," he said.

Those injured have been admitted to Bintulu Hospital.

Supt Alexon said the police are investigating the case under Section 4(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
