KOTA KINABALU: Police will continue to act against anyone selling marijuana for medical purposes as it is against the current laws, says Comm Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh.
The Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigations Department director said that the laws were enacted by Parliament and as such, it was the police's duty to enforce the law.
Commenting on some public suggestions to give leeway to allow
marijuana, or more commonly known as ganja, for medicinal purposes, Comm Mohmad said that enforcement would continue against those selling
it for any reason.
“It is illegal under the law, we will enforce the law until such time there is change to the law,” he told reporters after witnessing a
parade to mark the end of training for 240 trainee policemen here on Thursday (Jan 31).
He said under the Dangerous Drugs Act, it was an offence to possess, use or traffic in ganja.
However, he said that it was yet to be proven that ganja had medicinal benefits.
“People can say that it has medicinal values but it must be proven first. Our (police) action is based on the laws passed by Parliament.
“If in the future ganja is proven to have medicinal values, and laws are passed to make it legal, then we have no problem, as it stated as a legal drug by law,” he said, adding that there must be research on whether it really benefits the people.
