Woman killed, husband and baby injured in accident

KOTA KINABALU: A woman was killed, while her husband and her baby granddaughter sustained injuries following a mishap along the old Papar road some 24km from here on Tuesday morning (Jan 8).

The 60-year-old woman was with her husband, 66, and their one-year-old grandchild heading from Kinarut to Papar, when the accident occurred as they tried avoiding an oncoming vehicle which was overtaking other cars at about 10am.

Papar police chief Deputy Supt Batholomew Umpit said that according to witnesses, the trio were in a small car and had swerved to the side of the road when a four wheel drive (4WD) sped towards them as it was overtaking other cars.

“The driver of the car hit a road divider in the process of avoiding the 4WD,” he said.

He said metal from the divider pierced through the windscreen and hit the woman.

Supt Batholomew said the woman was believed to be killed on the spot, while her husband and baby sustained minor injuries.

The woman’s body has been sent to the Papar Hospital for post mortem, while the other two victims were brought in for treatment.

It is not known whether the 4WD driver has been taken to the police station to facilitate investigations.
