BFM looking into sexual harrassment claims

PETALING JAYA: BFM 89.9 is looking into allegations of sexual harassment at the radio station.

BFM 89.9 founder Malek Ali said while the company was unable to confirm whether sexual harassment had occurred, the allegations were being investigated.

“At this juncture, we are unable to confirm any of the situations described.

“We take all allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct seriously,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The allegations surfaced through a circulated email that alleged sexual harassment at the radio station occurred between staff members. The e-mail further alleged that the management had not looked into these sexual harassment claims seriously.

Malek said the company was committed to providing a safe environment “in which all members of our community can work without fear and threat of sexual harassment”.

“Internal investigations are initiated whenever an allegation is made.

“Our practice has been to offer employees discretion and fairness, and we take action when we learn of unacceptable behaviour,” said Malek in the statement.

Malek added that as an extra precaution, the media outlet was reviewing its reporting mechanism to ensure availability of safe channels for such serious matters to be dealt with.

“We continue to look for ways to improve our workplace to support and protect any member who comes forward with information or allegations about misconduct,” he said.

Women’s Aid Organi­­sation (WAO) executive director Sumitra Visvanathan has expressed concern over the allegation and is ready to give its support to victims.

Sisters in Islam executive director Rozana Isa said the allegations, if proven to be true, demonstrated the need for a law against sexual harassment.
