Cops raid gambling den for China clients in KL, 118 detained

KUALA LUMPUR: A management centre for an international gambling den was brought down by the police following a raid which saw 118 people detained.

City police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said that a raid was conducted on Nov 9 following preliminary investigations.

“The raid was conducted at a bungalow near Lorong Gurney (Kuala Lumpur) and saw 118 arrests,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday (Nov 13) at the Police Contingent Headquarters.

Only one suspect was found to be local whereas the rest were from China.

Around 118 laptops and 479 handphones were seized as well.

The police believed that the bungalow was an online gambling centre with the suspects acting as brokers of sorts to their clientele.

It is believed that the suspect chose Malaysia as a hub as the laws here were not as harsh as compared to China.

It is estimated that the gambling centre’s activities netted around RM6mil per month.

“We have contacted the Chinese embassy regarding this matter,” he said.

Investigations showed that the group focused on customers in China as opposed to local clientele.

“The suspects were believed to have entered the country on tourist visas,” he said.
