PETALING JAYA: The Customs Department had requested for a total of RM82.9bil of Goods and Services Tax (GST) refunds over a period of three years, but the amount was not paid in full, says its director-general.

Datuk Seri T. Subromaniam said the Customs trust account was short of RM19.4bil.

“The required amount for refunds for the period beginning April 1, 2015 till May 31, 2018 was RM82.9bil, but only RM63.5bil was transferred to the trust fund throughout the period,” he said.

Subromaniam said the RM19.4bil had yet to be approved for release during the Consolidated Fund’s monthly meetings.

“In the monthly meetings chaired by the Treasury secretary-general, we have reported the amount filed into our GST system by taxpayers through the GST-03 form for refunds,” he said.

“As of May 31, the trust account still needs RM19.4bil. (We are) facing difficulties paying,” Subromaniam said.
