BANGKOK: A protest convoy led by Mano Khrueakaew, known as “Kamnan Mano”, a leader of the People’s Revolution Coalition to Protect the Land, left Phetchaburi at 8.30am on Sunday (Nov 8) for Government House in Bangkok to submit a petition asking the government to consider cutting fuel prices by THB10 per litre.

The group also called for a review of the fuel pricing structure and urgent measures to help people facing rising living costs.

It announced plans to remain for a month, until Dec 7, when a no-confidence debate against the government is due to begin.

The Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) has announced the following road closures around Government House:

- From Chamai Maruchet Bridge to Suan Misakawan intersection.

- Nakhon Pathom Road in front of Wat Benchamabophit School.

- Soi Likhit.

- Rama V Road from the front of Krom Luang Chumphon Khet Udomsak Shrine to Orathai Bridge intersection.

The closures come as the group and its allies head towards Government House to hold activities.

The convoy is travelling into Bangkok along Borommaratchachonnani Road and across Phra Pinklao Bridge.

The MPB has initially arranged parking areas on Phitsanulok Road and Rama V Road.

If vehicle numbers are high, parking will be extended along Rama VI Road.

Motorists have been asked not to park on Ratchadamnoen Road because it is a key route.

Members of the public have been advised to avoid the affected roads and plan their journeys in advance.

Before setting off, the petitioners stayed overnight at Wat Cha-am Khiri in Cha-am district, Phetchaburi, after arriving in the area on Nov 7.

Residents along the route gave them a warm welcome, bringing food, drinking water and essential supplies and offering encouragement throughout the journey.

The convoy’s route on Sunday passes through Ratchaburi and Nakhon Pathom before reaching Bangkok.

Fuel prices have a widespread impact on travel, livelihoods and the cost of consumer goods, and Mano reiterated his call for the government to provide a clear and transparent breakdown of production and refining costs and the components of fuel prices.

The group emphasises road safety and careful driving.

Members of the public have expressed their intention to offer support and encouragement along the route.

The convoy aims to bring people’s hardship to the government’s attention. - The Nation/ANN
