Anwar visits Megawati in Indonesia

PETALING JAYA: Soon after being discharged from the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim visited Indonesia to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.

According to Anwar, he was welcomed by former Indonesian president Megawati Soekarnoputri and her daughter, Maharani.

"A lot was discussed, including recent political changes in the spirit of rebuilding a country. As Malaysia is on the precipice of transformation, we exchanged views on the late 'Bung Karno' and his commitment to national identity," Anwar said in a statement issued on Instagram on Wednesday (July 4).

The "Bung Karno" whom Anwar referred to is Indonesia's first president, Sukarno, the father of Megawati.

Anwar said that Megawati welcomed the appointment of Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as Malaysia's first female deputy prime minister.

Megawati regarded Wan Azizah's appointment as following the footsteps of Indonesia in recognising the role of women, he added.

"I also had the opportunity to meet a couple of old friends who had supported me since way back then," he added.

Anwar was warded in June 23 for 10 days following chronic shoulder pain.

Anwar underwent surgery on his right shoulder at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) in November last year.

He had been suffering continuous pain in his right shoulder, which worsened after a car accident on Sept 22, 2017.
