TOKYO: The world should not be cynical and take advantage of the new attitude shown by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Speaking at the 24th Nikkei Conference on The Future of Asia on Monday (June 11), the Prime Minister said people used to think of North Korea as a belligerent country.
“But now that he has made that kind of effort, we shouldn’t be cynical and should take advantage of this new attitude,” he said.
Dr Mahathir Mohamad was replying to a question by Nikkei Asian Review Editor-in-Chief Sonoko Watanabe on Malaysia’s view on the US-North Korean Summit on Tuesday (June 12), considering that Kim’s estranged brother Jong-nam was killed in the country.
Dr Mahathir Mohamad said North Korea was not the only country that practised assassinations, adding that there were many other nations that did the same.
“If we condemn them, then we will be unfriendly to many countries.”
US president Donald Trump is expected to meet Kim in a summit in Singapore on Tuesday, the first ever such meeting.
