KUALA LUMPUR: Singer-songwriter Namewee’s latest music video Good Morning celebrates the dawning of a new Malaysia after history was made with Pakatan Harapan voted in as the new Government.
In the Good Morning music video, the Muar-born musician strums his guitar and sings with Fara Dolhadi, accompanied by Dennis Lau on the violin and Joko Toh keeping the beat.
Originally produced as a commercial jingle, he adapted the visuals for Good Morning and uploaded after GE14.
In a Facebook post on May 10, the day after polling day, Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, wrote: “I am very happy that democracy in Malaysia is real. This is a day that belongs to the people.
“Hopefully, discriminatory policies and laws that suppress freedom of expression or creativity, decrees of false arrests and ideas of racial discrimination can all be cast aside. People can be truly fair and just and democratic and free.”
He hoped that his banned film – Banglasia – could be released, his 4896 World Tour concert in Kuala Lumpur be approved, and his future creative projects would be accorded more artistic freedom.
Namewee, 35, is known for courting controversy with his statements and blunt social commentaries that led to him being arrested on several occasions.
In August last year, Namewee released Ali Ahkao Dan Muthu, a patriotic song he wrote to mark the 60th Merdeka. The video has racked up 3.5 million views on YouTube so far.
A prolific songwriter and music video producer, Namewee also writes for many others.
He has released solo albums titled Asia Most Wanted (2013), Asian Killer (2015), Crossover Asia (2016), and All Eat Asia (2017).
Namewee has also directed films like Nasi Lemak 2.0 (2011), Hantu Gangster (2012), Kara King (2013) and The Game Of Las Vegas (2016), besides acting in movies like Petaling Street Warriors (2011), Ah Beng: Mission Impossible (2014), The Big Power (2016) and The Amazing Titanman (2018).
