Adnan to be sworn in as Pahang MB for fifth term

KUANTAN: State Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob is expected to be sworn in as Pahang mentri besar for his fifth term today.

The presentation of appointment letter and swearing-in ceremony will take place at Istana Abu Bakar in Pekan at 9.30am.

The Regent of Pahang Tengku Mahkota Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah will preside over the ceremony. An investiture ceremony in conjunction with the Sultan of Pahang’s birthday will also be held following the swearing in.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Adnan thanked voters for allowing Barisan to form the state government again.

“I thank all voters for choosing Barisan until we managed to obtain a simple majority of 25 seats. For the two-thirds majority, we needed 28.

“In the last term, we had 30 seats, now, 25 seats; we are grateful to Allah and are thankful to all,” he wrote.

Although Pahang remains a Barisan state, the party has taken a beating as the number of seats have continuously diminished over the past few elections.

PAS secured the largest gain by capturing eight state seats this time, pulling off several surprise victories.

The Pakatan Harapan coalition managed to defend nine seats, with DAP holding seven and PKR, two. It lost Kuala Semantan to Barisan.

As for the 14 parliamentary seats in Pahang, Barisan retained its hold on nine while Bentong, Raub, Indera Mahkota, Kuantan and Temerloh all fell to Pakatan.

In Seremban, the new Negri Sembilan mentri besar will be sworn in before Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir at Istana Besar in Seri Menanti, Kuala Pilah, at 10am today.

State Pakatan Harapan chief Aminudin Harun is expected to be named the new mentri besar after he was endorsed by its chief Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

The three-term Sikamat assemblyman is from Parti Keadilan Rakyat.

Aminuddin handed over a letter from Wan Azizah to the state Ruler yesterday. Also present were Pakatan’s 19 other state assemblymen.

Pakatan won 20 of the 36 state seats in the May 9 polls.
