There is a high rate of obesity among Malaysians because they are prosperous and well-fed, said Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Moktar Radin.
As such, the Opposition cannot claim that the country is not prospering because, he argued, the number of obesity-related deaths and diseases was high.
He said Malaysians are fortunate as its people “can afford to overeat”.
“The Opposition leader says that many do not have the opportunity to work and lack a healthy diet – but I think this is fake news. What I see is that our nation is blessed with abundance of food,” said Bung Moktar when debating the motion of thanks on the Royal Address.
The Barisan Nasional MP offered to take Opposition lawmakers on trips to countries where its people are forced to scavenge for food.
Bung Mohktar raised the argument in response to Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (PKR-Permatang Pauh), who claimed that the rakyat was suffering.
According to The Economist’s Intelligence Unit’s Tackling Obesity In Asean report, the Malaysian Adult Nutrition Study claimed that only one-third of the adult population had ever exercised and only 14% performed adequate levels of exercise.
