Three-term Penang assemblyman Lye Siew Weng passes away


GEORGE TOWN: Three-term Penang assemblyman Datuk Lye Siew Weng(pic) passed away this morning at the age of 77. 

His wife Datin Moo Siew Yoong, 75, said her husband succumbed to bone cancer at 10.08am in the Palliative Ward of Penang Hospital in Jalan Perak.

Lye, who is a MCA veteran, left behind a daughter, two sons and three
grandchildren.

He was elected as Ayer Itam assemblyman for two terms. from 1995 to 1999 and 1999 to 2004. He then held the Air Putih state seat from 2004 to 2008.

He was also the former Deputy Speaker of Penang State Assembly from 2004 to 2008.
Penang Barisan Nasional chairman Teng Chang Yeow, in a Facebook post, described Lye as humble, down to earth and a helpful leader.

"He was a teacher, primary school headmaster, municipal councillor and social worker!  I was with him as municipal councillor and assemblyman. R.I.P (Rest in peace)," wrote Teng on Wednesday (Feb 28).

Lye's wake is being held at the Mount Erskine funeral parlour and his funeral will be held on Sunday (March 4).
