Two primary schools in Sabah remain closed

KOTA KINABALU: Over 600 people remained at three temporary relief centres as two primary schools remained closed due to floods in Sabah’s southwestern Membakut area in Beaufort district, about 100km from here.

The 626 evacuees from 218 families, including 29 babies and 44 senior citizens, were being housed at the Membakut multi-purpose hall, the Kafa building hall in Membakut and the St Patrick school hall.

A spokesman for the Civil Defence Department said the Membakut river remained swollen due to inclement weather and at least 26 villages and nine roads were still flooded.

Sabah Education Department said two primary schools – SK Jabang and SK Kg Brunei – which have a total 310 students and teachers, remained closed yesterday due to the floods.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman, who is Kimanis MP, also visited the flood victims on Thursday and extended assistance.
