Ayub: Two weeks to determine cause of Muar food poisoning

JOHOR BARU: It will take two weeks for laboratory reports to determine the cause of the food poisoning incident at Kolej Vokasional Muar on Monday (Nov 20).

Johor Health, Environment, Education and Information committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said only one student is still receiving treatment at the Muar Specialist Hospital.

"The 17-year-old girl is in stable condition. No other students have came forward with similar symptoms," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

It was reported that 380 students and teachers had attended a seafood feast to celebrate the end of the school term.

The next morning, some 128 students started having stomach aches, nausea, stomach cramps, fever and diarrhoea.

The dinner on Saturday (Nov 18) night was served in "shell out" style which included mussels, prawns and crabs cooked in sambal.

The food items were placed and eaten straight off the tabletops without plates.

It is believed that the mussels were the source of the food poisoning.

Ayub said the feast was prepared by the hostel canteen operator at the college.
