KL police chief: Never acceptable to attack cops

KUALA LUMPUR: Police will not compromise over an incident where a group of Chinese nationals set upon a team of policemen investigating a tip-off about illegal gambling in Jalan Abraham, forcing the cops to fire several warning shots.

"We will take stern action as they attacked our personnel who were trying to carry out their duties. We will carry out a detailed investigation to probe the cause of the incident," Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Mazlan Lazim told reporters after his contingent's monthly gathering here on Monday.

Comm Mazlan said that there could have been miscommunication between the policemen and the suspects but it was inappropriate for them to have attacked the policemen who were only trying to carry out their duty.

He added that eight suspects, all Chinese nationals including two women, have been remanded for three days until Tuesday (Nov 14).

Comm Mazlan said the suspects had work permits and some were working at a construction site nearby.

Sixty-eight people in total were detained over the incident but 60 from the group were later released.
