KUCHING: Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, received a traditional welcome at the Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV), the first stop of their visit to Sarawak here on Monday.
SCV performers in traditional dress put on a welcoming dance at the entrance, accompanied by traditional musicians.
Schoolchildren from the nearby SK Santubong, wearing colourful costumes representing the state's diverse ethnic groups, received the royal couple as they entered and walked to the Iban longhouse to start their tour of the SCV.
Prince Charles had a brief dialogue with local community leaders at SCV's Persada Alam building, while Camilla went to the Dewan Lagenda for a craft exhibition.
The royal couple then stopped by the Penan hut, where Prince Charles tried his hand at shooting a blowpipe, and later visited the Melanau house to watch a bamboo dance.
The couple then crossed the lake at SCV on a bamboo raft and signed the guestbook before leaving.
Prince Charles later visited the Semenggoh Nature Reserve and Sarawak Biodiversity Centre, while Camilla met representatives of women's empowerment NGO Purple Lily at the Old Courthouse.
The visit to Sarawak is part of the royal couple's seven-day visit to Malaysia.
