Builders: Prefab-type construction can bring down prices

PETALING JAYA: Technology will help reduce the cost of construction over the long term although the initial cost may be high, says Master Builders Association Malaysia.

Its president Foo Chek Lee said the use of the industrial building system involves a type of prefabrication, in which units are “assembled” on-site.

“As affordable housing is quite standard, this will help to bring down prices.

“A single floor can be completed in a week compared to between 80 and 100 days using current methods of construction,” he said.

Foo said affordable housing can be replicated in different locations so the developer could use the same system or materials over and over again.

“This repeated process coupled with economies of scale, usage of less labour and faster completion can help to bring down costs,” he added.
