‘Police must ensure all can rally peacefully’

PETALING JAYA: Police and the authorities must ensure that the actions of counter-demonstrators do not degenerate into intimidation and rioting, said Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) chairman Tan Sri Razali Ismail (pic).

He said it was important for police to ensure that all Malaysians were able to articulate their positions and opinions responsibly.

“We support the efforts of the police in this direction, particularly to show discipline and even-handed enforcement of the law.

“This is a hallmark of political maturity,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Razali said in carrying out its mandate, Suhakam would be monitoring the planned assemblies.

“The Commission’s complaints division will accept complaints from any aggrieved member of the public in accordance with its mandate and the powers conferred to it by Parliament,” he said.
