Najib vows not to budge ‘even an inch’

JELEBU: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has vowed not to budge “even an inch” despite continuous attacks against his leadership.

The Prime Minister said the recent Sarawak election and the by-elections in Sg Besar and Kuala Kangsar were indications of the people’s support of his leadership.

“There is no retreat, no surrender. As far as I am concerned, Barisan Nasional is doing the right thing and the people have endorsed this,” he said after opening the Jelebu Umno meeting which was followed by a meet-the-people session here.

Najib said Malaysians should not be influenced by allegations made on social media and some foreign newspapers.

“I am not saying that our administration is perfect. Like any other government, we have our shortcomings and problems but these can be corrected.

“What I cannot accept are attempts by disgruntled politicians and individuals to illegally bring down our political institution,” he said.

Barisan, he said, had consistently delivered on its promises to the people since independence.

“We are not a splinter party set up by disgruntled people. Umno was set up 70 years ago on the blood, sweat and tears of our forefathers. We are not going to allow anyone to destroy us,” he said.

Without naming Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Najib said:

“I remained loyal and never questioned him when he was party president for 22 years.

“There were also problems then, some of which we managed to resolve and some we just closed them,” he said without elaborating.

Najib said he would continue to serve Malaysians as best as he could and hoped the critics would let him do his job.

“I am not going to cave in to pressure to go on leave.”

Earlier in Malacca, he said he would pass the baton to his successor once the time was right.

“I was chosen democratically and no one could force me out just like that,” he said.

Addressing the opening of Tangga Batu Umno division meeting yesterday, he said neo-colonisation by foreign powers could emerge if certain quarters were willing to share confidential documents with outsiders.

He said Malaysians should learn from history how the Malacca Sultanate fell to Portuguese when locals who were at loggerheads with each other were willing to collaborate with foreigners.

“History is a testimony of how we could lose our sovereignty if we were in cahoots with foreigners.”

“I would never allow this to repeat and will defend the sovereignty of this country all the way,” he said.

Najib said some former leaders from the party were too emotional and willing to work with foreigners to achieve their personal goals without considering the consequences.
