KUALA LUMPUR: The amendment Bill to seek harsher punishments for Muslims was just a sneaky tactic by Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, said Wanita MCA chairman Datuk Heng Seai Kie.

She said the PAS president’s ultimate goal was to form an Islamic state in Malaysia.

The Bill, if passed, would destroy the integrity of the Federal Constitution, she added.

“This is just like opening up the floodgates for PAS to impose the laws and eventually turn the country into an Islamic state,” she warned.

Heng said the Bill was also in violation of the Constitution, which limits punishments under the Syariah law to a maximum of three years’ jail, RM5,000 fine, and six strokes of the rotan.

“We cannot allow this to happen.

“We are defending a secular governing system at all costs. We will not compromise,” she said.
