PETALING JAYA: Polis Evo has become the country’s top-grossing Malaysian movie.

Released on Sept 17, the movie has collected RM17.3mil at the box office, beating the record held by The Journey, which earned RM17.28mil during its 56-day run last year.

Polis Evo, an Astro Shaw production, is directed by Ghaz Abu Bakar and stars Shaheizy Sam and Zizan Razak as two policemen with different personalities working together to solve a case.

The movie, set in Terengganu, has been praised for its well-executed action scenes and solid performances by the lead actors.

Astro Shaw head and executive producer Najwa Abu Bakar said she was ecstatic with the success.

Polis Evo proves that moviegoers will support local content with exceptional storytelling. We can’t change the industry overnight but we can start thinking about producing better quality movies for our audience. It starts with having a great team,” Najwa said.

Shaheizy, 33, said the achievement was a major boost to the local film industry, .

“People have been making films but they’ve been flops. Filmmakers thought we don’t have supporters anymore. We still have supporters but it’s about how we go about making a film.”
