Gani pays his last respects

PETALING JAYA: Former attorney-general Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail turned up at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital to pay his last respects to his former subordinate Deputy Public Prosecutor Anthony Kevin Morais.

In what may be his first public appearance since he was replaced, Abdul Gani arrived at about 2pm and was seen embracing Kevin’s family members and other prosecutors inside the mortuary.

“It’s a sad day. We have lost a good officer,” said Abdul Gani, adding that Kevin was “a good man” and one whom he trusted to handle some of the Attorney-General Chambers’ toughest cases during his career.

Asked if the 55-year-old’s work was what led to his death, he refused to speculate.

“I don’t have any idea. Please ask the police officers. But I wish the family well,” he added before walking to his car and driving off.

Expressing its condolences to Kevin’s family, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said his death was a big loss to the country’s law enforcement community.

It also thanked the police for their work in solving the mystery over his disappearance and hoped that the culprits would be brought to justice.

“All the staff would like to convey our sympathies over the incident involving the late Kevin, who served with distinction and total dedication at the MACC for 10 years before he returned to the Chambers on July 2014.

“The commission hopes his family will remain strong in dealing with their loss,” it said in a statement yesterday.
