Top routine: Team Anselm performing at the CHEER Southern Regionals.

MALACCA: It is glee all around for team Anselm from SMK Infant Jesus Convent ahead of the CHEER 2015 Finals, as it has been declared the CHEER Southern Regionals winner.

This is its fourth win and the team is hoping the good news will prelude better things to come.

The battle went down to the wire at Hang Tuah Hall here yesterday, where the defending champion competed against three other teams – Ignite A from SMK Bandar Baru Uda, Johor (second place), Anselm’s sister team Mathilde (third) and Ignite B.

Anselm team captain Lee Zhi Wee, 17, was initially worried as a cheerleader was injured during training and another team member had a high fever the night before.

She is proud of her team for pulling through despite the odds.

Head judge Beverley Hon, president of the Cheerleading Association and Register of Malaysia (CHARM), said the teams did quite well and advised them to perfect their basic techniques and familiarise themselves with the rules of the game.

Lee, who said her team was going through financial difficulties, was glad to win the RM2,000 cash prize, medals and an all-expenses paid trip to Kuala Lumpur to compete in the finals.

Ignite A and Mathilde also walked away with medals, cash prizes of RM1,500 and RM1,000, and an all-expenses paid trip to the finals.

All four teams will be among the 41 teams at the CHEER Finals, happening on Aug 15 from 8am to 6pm at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre. Admission is free.
