Perak ministry seizes 170kg of subsidised cooking oil in raid

IPOH: The Perak Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living seized 170kg of subsidised cooking oil and detained a Bangladeshi man during a raid in the Lahat Industrial Area here.

The ministry’s Perak director, Datuk Kamalludin Ismail, said the operation was conducted at about 3.30pm on June 8 after a public complaint alleged that the premises were being used to store controlled cooking oil.

He said enforcement officers found packaged cooking oil of various brands in the room during the inspection.

“A 39-year-old Bangladeshi man, who claimed to be the tenant of the premises, was detained to assist in investigations.

“He informed officers that the cooking oil did not belong to him.

“However, he failed to produce any valid authorisation documents from the Malaysian Supply Controller for dealings involving controlled goods,” he said in a statement today (June 9).

Kamalludin said authorities also seized several related documents, with the total value of the confiscated items estimated at RM425.

The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 and the Control of Supplies Regulations 1974.

He urged the public to continue assisting authorities by reporting any information related to the misappropriation or illegal trading of controlled and subsidised goods to help curb the leakage of government subsidies.
