Aziz Kaprawi: 'Almost certain' Boeing 777 debris

French authorities inspect the debris believed to be a Boeing 777 wing span on Reunion Island

PETALING JAYA: The piece believed to be part of missing MH370 flight found on Réunion Island is "almost certainly" from a Boeing 777 aircraft, said Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi.

"The flaperon is similar with that on a Boeing 777 aircraft. It's almost certain (that it is from a Boeing 777)," the Deputy Transport Minister told The Star.

He said, however that the Ministry still could not confirm it belonged to MH370, which went missing with 239 people on March 8, 2014.

He added that a Malaysian team would be on its way to Réunion Island to see if the piece did indeed belong to the missing flight.

Aziz hoped that the team would be able to conclude in a couple of days if the debris belonged to MH370.

If it was confirmed, it could either be sent back to Malaysia or to an ICAO-certified (International Civil Aviation Organisation) lab in Paris for further investigation, he said.

"Once our team reaches there, they will decide at Réunion Island with our minister's (Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai) input," he said.

"The team is expected to leave Malaysia tonight (Thursday night)," he added.
