PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak wants Mara-sponsored student Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin who was jailed for possession of child pornography to be given counselling so that he would not repeat the offence.
"I do not agree with with the suggestion or comment that the Government appeal the case of Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin for a lesser sentence, what more use public funds for the purpose.
"Nur Fitri has been tried according to the legal system in Britain and given the opportunity to defend himself and was found guilty.
"The offence is serious," Najib said in a post on NajibRazak.com.
The Prime Minister said the process of law should be respected and anyone found guilty must be punished accordingly.
"Nur Fitri must be given the services of counselling so that he will not repeat the offence, for his sake and that of society.
"This should be carried out so that he can be accepted back into society," Najib said.
Nur Fitri, a student at Imperial College London, was arrested during a raid at his home in Queensborough Terrace near Hyde Park on Nov 20 last year.
He pleaded guilty and began his jail sentence in April after being caught with more than 30,000 images and videos of children being abused, including “Category A” images which involving sexual penetration of children.
