KUANTAN: A birthday celebration by the poolside of a leading hotel here turned tragic when a boy drowned in the swimming pool.
Lai Jin Shien, 11, from Bukit Sekilau was found lifeless at about 4.30pm on Sunday.
Lai was a Year 5 pupil from SJK (C) Pei Chai, Air Putih here.
It is learnt that his family members took him to the hospital after he was brought out from the pool.
Doctors failed to save Lai and he was pronounced dead at 4.48pm.
Police said there were no elements of crime in the boy's death.
Initial investigations revealed that the boy was attending a classmate's birthday celebrations shortly before the incident.
It is not known whether he had fallen into the pool or went to swim on his own.
No one noticed Lai and only realised later when he was spotted floating in the swimming pool.
A police report had been lodged by the family and police were awaiting the post-mortem report.
Kuantan OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Aziz Salleh confirmed the incident, adding that the case had been classified as sudden death.
