MCA wants action against 'cross' protesters

PETALING JAYA: The MCA regrets the action by a group of residents who protested against a cross at a shoplot church in Taman Medan on Sunday.

Its Religious Harmony Bureau chairman Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker (pic) said according to a news report one of the protesters was Munaliza Hamzah, a Barisan Nasional candidate who lost to PKR's Haniza Mohamed Talha in the 2008 general election.

Calling on the Inspector-General f Police to investigate regardless of whether they are from BN or the opposition, he said that it was time for all component parties to put their house in order.

"We cannot afford individual members' actions or words that will damage the good work of others. We cannot allow 50 persons to take the law into their own hands," he said in a statement on Monday.

For Barisan to win, Ti said component parties must be mindful of their actions that might affect other component parties adversely.

"All thuggish, brutish actions or crude or rude statements against the spirit of BN policies and practices must be stopped immediately if BN wants to survive the next elections collectively," he said.

Otherwise, Ti said Barisan will soon disintegrate and extremism and not moderation will rule the day.

"We have shown disrespect for the right of others to their freedom to practice their faith.

"There’s no law forbidding others to practise their religion in an area consisting of mainly Malays or Muslim majority.

"Similarly we do not want East Malaysian Christians to protest against Islamic practices in a constituency that is populated largely by Christians," he said in asking Umno to take action against Munaliza.
