Wisma Putra confirms Malaysian student killed in Shanghai stampede

PETALING JAYA: The Foreign Ministry confirmed that a Malaysian was killed in the stampede at Chen Yi Square, Shanghai on New Year’s Eve.

Wisma Putra said in a statement late Thursday that the victim, believed to be a student in a university in Hangzhou, could not be named until the family had been informed.

“Efforts are undertaken to inform the victim’s family in Malaysia,” the ministry said.

The statement said another Malaysian, Ooi Hooi Yi, 20, was injured in the incident that killed 35 people and injured 48 others.

"She was given medical attention at the Changzheng Hospital, Shanghai.

"Officers from Consulate General Malaysia in Shanghai had visited her at the hospital and reported that she is in a stable condition,” the statement said.

The consulate is also checking to ensure that no other Malaysians were involved in the incident.
