In all instances where the Quran specifies a punishment, the Quran also calls for repentance, mercy and reformation.
Most Malaysians know the literal meaning of the word hudud, the plural of hadd. This Arabic word is found on Malaysian road signs indicating the had laju, or “speed limit.” The word hudud is used with the exact same meaning in the Quran, referring to “God’s fixed limits” which should not be approached, let alone exceeded (2:229-230 and 4: 12-13).
