Cops: Investigations on man who arrowed dog complete, charges unlikely

SERDANG: Police doubt any charges will be brought against the man who shot two arrows into a dog outside his house in Taman Sinaran, Taming Jaya.

"He claimed it was in self defence, saying the dog was trying to enter the house and he did it to protect his children, ACP Abdul Rashid said on Friday.

Kajang OCPD ACP Abdul Rashid Abdul Wahab said police had wrapped up investigations and had forwarded the case papers to Bukit Aman though he doubted the man would be charged.

"It is up to the DPP (Deputy Public Prosecutor) to take up the case against the man," he added, acknowledging that the incident had provoked public anger.

ACP Abdul Rashid clarified it was not illegal to own a bow and arrows, as a licence for the weapon was not required. However, it was illegal to carry it around in public.

On Tuesday, the man shot and wounded the dog, which had stood at his gate and refused to move.

One arrow lodged hit the front leg while another hit the dog's back.

The man potentially faced a charge of mischief for maiming the animal under Section 429 of the Penal Code.

He was also investigated under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 for carrying an offensive weapon in public spaces.

Animal activists who later rushed the dog to a veterinary clinic for first aid said it was an old, partially blind Rottweiler.

Animal activist group Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) had adopted the canine and named it Brianna.

A veterinarian at a clinic in Subang Jaya said Brianna had been given medication but was in poor health.
