Missing MH370: Transportation of batteries in cargo complies with international standards

SEPANG: The batteries in the cargo hold of the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 were non-hazardous, and its transportation complies with standards set by international aviation authorities.

"It is deemed non-hazardous cargo, provided it is handled in accordance to very specific and strict guidelines and compliance.

"This is done by all airlines," said Malaysia Airlines chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahaya told a press conference here.

He also clarified that the batteries were not of the lithium-ion type as reported, and added there had been 141 previously reported incidents involving lithium-ion batteries between 1991 to February this year.
