Missing MAS flight: Cops to take action against rumour-mongers, says IGP

KUANTAN: The police will take action against those who spread unfounded rumours of missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH370 on the social media, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

He urged social media users to exercise sensitivity towards the families of passengers and crewmembers of the flight, saying that some of the rumours posted online were excessive.

"Don't just say whatever you like. Think before you speak," Khalid said after presenting donations to Pahang police personnel who were affected by the December floods here on Sunday.

Khalid declined to comment when asked whether security at airports would be increased following reports that two imposters had boarded the flight.

"There are too many people speaking on this issue and to avoid confusion, I ask for questions concerning MH370 to be deferred to the Sepang operations coordination centre.

"By policy, we will always ensure security at our gates but you have to understand it is not only the police who are involved in checking on those who enter and exit our country," he said.

On the Federal Bureau of Investigations' (FBI) involvement in investigating the disappearance of the aircraft, Khalid said the police welcomed assistance from any intelligence agencies.

"We work with everyone including the FBI so it is nothing new if we receive information from them. Our collaboration with international enforcement agencies is always ongoing," he said.

Khalid also said the police force had deployed its assets to assist in the search and rescue operation.

"When the location of MH370 is determined and if a rescue operation is required within our territory, then we will enter the rescue phase," he said.
