GEORGE TOWN: DAP national chairman Karpal Singh wants the Attorney-General to bring criminal charges against newly-appointed MIC treasurer-general Datuk R. Ramanan, after a High Court in Kuala Lumpur ruled that the latter had fraudulently received RM5.5mil.

“The finding by the High Court on Thursday that there was fraud by way of misrepresentation by Ramanan, brings into sharp focus the necessity of the High Court judge to direct that the matter be transferred to the public prosecutor for possible criminal prosecution.

“In fact, a judge under these circumstances is obliged to do so,” he told a press conference on Saturday.

It was reported on that Judicial Commissioner Lee Heng Cheong ordered Ramanan to return RM5.5mil to renowned psychiatrist Tan Sri Dr M. Mahadevan after finding that Ramanan had misrepresented himself to Dr Mahadevan.

This resulted in Dr Mahadevan transferring the amount into Ramanan’s personal account on May 19, 2010.

Karpal also urged A-G Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, who is also the public prosecutor, to direct the police to conduct an investigation to prosecute Ramanan under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
