Hundreds turned up to seek justice for marketing executive who was raped and murdered

SUNGAI PETANI: Hundreds turned up on Saturday at the Wat Siam in Sungai Petani, Kedah here to seek justice for Chee Gaik Yap, a marketing executive who was raped and murdered in 2006.

The demands put forth by them include appealing to the Attorney-General to provide updates on the case development and to add a rape charge on the suspect.

Among those present are Gaik Yap's father, Chee Ah Sau as well as Berapit assemblyman Lydia Ong and State Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang.

Eight years ago, Gaik Yap, 25, a Universiti Utara Malaysia graduate, was believed to have been tailed by her assailant while jogging in the neighbourhood of Taman Ria Jaya in Sungai Petani.

She was kidnapped, raped and killed before her body was dumped at the housing estate.

Car salesman Shahril Jaafar, 33, from Ayer Keroh, Malacca, was on trial for the murder that took place between 5.30pm on Jan 14, 2006, and 3.05am on Jan 15, 2006, near the Cinta Sayang Club in Taman Ria Jaya, Sungai Petani.

Shahril was acquitted of the murder charge by the High Court last year.
