PETALING JAYA: A team of singers, including a three-year-old girl, has released the country’s first Tamil nursery rhymes album.

Featuring several original songs and translations of popular English nursery rhymes, the album, called Siruvar Varnangal (Colours of the Young) is now available for RM15 in music stores nationwide and US$9.99 online on iTunes.

The album has 33 different versions of 15 songs.

Lead singer and violinist Gayathri Vadivel, 32, said she came up with the idea for the album when she was expecting her second child in 2012.

“I used to attend Tamil tuition when I was in primary school and my teacher taught us some of these Tamil rhymes. I never forget these songs.

“When I had my first child, I taught her these songs and she loved it.

“She kept humming the songs and I thought to myself that these songs must be shared with more children,” she said, adding that there had not been any other compilation of Tamil nursery rhymes in the country.

Her daughter, three-year-old Thareqa Vadivale, is the youngest singer of the team, which comprises of two adults and five children, and has sung three songs in the album.
