JALAN ALOR VIEW

KUALA LUMPUR: The plan to transform Jalan Alor into a world-class street food paradise will go ahead despite some objections.

Promoting the road would bring about greater good to the Golden Triangle, said Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

“The area will be cleaned up. It will be economically beneficial, and it will also boost tourism,” he said when commenting on criticisms against the authorities for pushing such projects in the former red light district which had alleged that it would only benefit the Chinese.

A Malay daily claimed that the Bukit Bintang area was like Hong Kong because of the dominant influence of the Chinese.

The editorial also pointed out that Barisan Nasional would not gain greater support even if it were to “give the moon and the stars to the disgruntled group”.

Tengku Adnan said the project was being implemented for the betterment of the area. “We are certainly going ahead with it.”

The project would kick off in October and should be completed within a year.

Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib had announced last month that Jalan Alor would be upgraded into a food paradise of international standard.

Upgrading works in the area include fitting quality furniture, and improving the waste disposal as well as the water supply systems.

Tengku Adnan met Federal Territories elected representatives from both sides of the political divide to inform them about the project.
