GEORGE TOWN: Casting of all precast Segmental Box Girders (SBGs) for the second Penang bridge has been completed.
Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd (JKSB) managing director Datuk Dr Ismail Mohamed Taib said 8,092 SBGs were completed by UEM Builders Bhd more than three months ahead of schedule.
“The casting was completed 100 days ahead of schedule which is very good.
“I'm impressed with the turnaround because in the initial stages, the progress of the bridge was slightly delayed because of the SBGs.
“In July 2010, only 10 SBGs were produced but in May, a record of 463 SBGs were casted,” he said.
He said although the casting process was expedited, the quality of the SBGs was not compromised.
He was speaking at a press conference at the UEM Builders casting yard in Batu Kawan, yesterday.
UEM Builders was awarded the project to construct the bridge's superstructure comprising casting and erection of the 8,092 SBGs.
