KUALA LUMPUR: At least 18 people were killed in road accidents at the start of a safety campaign during a holiday week when millions of Malaysians are expected to travel, police said Wednesday.
A police statement said the 18 deaths occurred in 16 crashes on Tuesday, the first day of traffic safety operations ahead of the back-to-back celebrations of Diwali _ the Hindu festival of lights on Saturday _ and the Muslim celebration of Eid al-Fitr next Tuesday and Wednesday.
