Sarawak Tribune suspended with immediate effect

The Internal Security Minister, in accordance with the power vested in him under sub-section 6 (2) of the Printing Press and Publication Act 1984 (Act 301), has decided that the publishing permit issued to The Sarawak Press Sdn Bhd be suspended with immediate effect, until a definite date in the future. The decision was made following the action of its newspaper, Sarawak Tribune, dated February 4, 2006 to publish an article titled 'Cartoon not much impact here' which also accompanied a caricature of Prophet Muhammad.  

As a result of publishing the article, The Sarawaak Press Sdn Bhd has committed an offence and breached paragraph 6 of the conditions for the permit issued to it under subsection 6 (1) of the said Act.
