Endon laid to rest at cemetery in Precinct 20

PUTRAJAYA: The late Datin Paduka Seri Endon Mahmood was laid to rest at the Taman Selatan Muslim Cemetery in Precinct 20 here last evening.

The hearse carrying her body, with the coffin draped in the national flag and jasmine garlands, arrived at the cemetery at 5.07pm, just after a drizzle. Eight pallbearers, made up of members of the security forces, carried the coffin aloft to the burial plot.

Accompanying her remains were a solemn-looking Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, their two children and their respective spouses, four grandchildren, close family members and friends.

SOLEMN: Abdullah, Kamaluddin, Khairy and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak reciting prayers to seek blessings forthe departed.

As Endon’s body was lowered into the ground, her only daughter Nori gripped brother Kamaluddin’s arm and sobbed quietly. Her husband Khairy Jamaluddin was standing in the grave together with several others to help with the lowering of the body.

Close by were daughter-in-law Azrene Abdullah and Endon’s four grandchildren.

Immediately after the talqin was read by Putra Mosque Imam Manaf Mat, Abdullah led the family to sprinkle rose-scented water and flowers onto her grave.

Among the foreign dignitaries present at the burial site were Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, her Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo, Brunei Crown Prince Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah Bolkiahippine, Thailand Deputy Prime Minister Dr Surakiart Sathirathai and Foreign Minister Kantathi Suphamongkhon, and Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Alwi Shihab.

Her resting place is a few metres away from the late Petronas and Putrajaya Corporation Chairman Tan Sri Azizan Zainul Abidin who died last year.
