Soon Kit’s wife beats 13 others to Mrs Malaysia title

KUALA LUMPUR: Although he was in China, national badminton women’s doubles coach Cheah Soon Kit gave words of encouragement via short messaging service (SMS) to his wife Anita Phang Yee Mun, who was crowned Mrs Malaysia 2003 here last night. 

“We would SMS each other every day. And we will probably celebrate tomorrow night with the rest of the family. The most important thing is family,” Phang said after beating 13 other women to the title.

Cheah was in China for the recently concluded China Open. But he and their daughter, Xiao Tung, were at the pageant last night to celebrate Phang's victory. 

Cheah said he was proud of his wife. 

“I told her to just go ahead and enjoy herself. I was away for two weeks but called her and told her not to be nervous,” he added. 

Phang, 28 will represent the country at the Mrs World competition, which is scheduled to be held in Las Vegas in April next year.  

First runner-up Catherine Teoh Boay Lan, 31, will be the country’s representative at the Mrs Universe Pageant in South Africa while second runner-up Maggie Ong Lay Hoon, 34, will go for the Mrs Asia-Pacific competition in the Philippines.  

Both competitions will be held next August. 

Phang, a part-time model, was crowned by Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Malaysia Rosy Senanayake who was the first Mrs World in 1985.
