Asean youths pick South Korea as most trustworthy country

YOUNG adults of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) member states picked South Korea as the most trustworthy country among all of the countries around the globe, a survey showed recently.

The Asean-Korea Centre conducted the survey of 1,800 young people in nine Asean nations, excluding Myanmar, 500 young people from 10 Asean countries living in South Korea and 100 Korean young people between August and September of last year. The participants were between the ages of 19 and 34.

The survey showed that 93.6% of Asean youth and 96.7% of Asean youth residing in Korea responded that they trust Korea the most. For the same question, Japan (92%) came in second and Australia (87.6%) third. Participating Asean young people residing in Korea answered Australia (91.7%) and Japan (88.2%) as countries they trust.

Meanwhile, Korean young people picked the United States (82.7%) as the most trustworthy country, followed by Australia (80.1%) and Asean (64.4%). They thought Asean countries would be the second most helpful member state in the future, while the US came first.

Asean young people also showed considerable interest in Korea, with 90.4% of Asean youth and 97.7% of Asean youth in Korea showing a high level of interest in the country in the survey. They get the most amount of information and content about Korea via social media, the internet and television programs.

Young people in Asean member states looked for information regarding Korean food (59.5%) the most, followed by travel (49.7%) and culture and arts (43.3%). Asean youth living in Korea searched for information on travel (48.9%), culture and arts (42.4%) and food (40.3%).

When Asean youth were asked to think of an image of Korea, the majority of the respondents said that K-pop came to mind first. It was followed by K-dramas and kimchi. In the meantime, they described an image of Korean people using words such as pretty, light-skinned, friendly, kindly and diligent. – The Korea Herald/Asia News Network
