UTAR trio win ‘Best Paper Award’

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) student Goh Ken Why (pic) and academics Assoc Prof Dr Ooi Boon Yaik and Dr Kh’ng Xin Yi were presented with the Best Paper Award at the 2023 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Industrial Electronics and Applications Conference (IEACon) recently.

The award-winning thesis paper, co-authored by the trio from the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FICT), was titled “Efficient Internet of Things (IoT) data processing framework for high-velocity data to non-intrusively track machine operation status”.

Their research focused on the growth of the IoT.

It aimed to introduce a sound compression technique and a sound recognition model, which was specially designed to streamline the process of data acquisition and reduce network latency without losing much accuracy.

“The proposed framework provides a low-cost solution while delivering high accuracy in results. Handling the vast amount of generated data in the era of IoT is becoming a challenge.

“Not only do the technical challenges present themselves in increasing numbers, but data transmission and data storage are also getting more expensive,” Goh said in a press release from the varsity.

Held in Penang from Nov 6 to 7, the fourth iteration of IEACon was organised by the IEEE Malaysia Industrial Electronics (IE) / Industrial Applications (IA) Joint Chapter to provide high-quality research and professional interactions for the advancement of science, technology, and fellowship.

It featured keynotes, technical paper presentations and technical exhibitions.
