One Academy students shine bright at Terang

Harmonising diversity: Chong’s winning entry transformed MaTiC into a canvas of colours.

Weaving together culture and innovation, three of The One Academy’s digital media design students dazzled judges with their captivating light visuals at Terang 2023.

First and second prize winners Eunice Chong and Esther Loh Zi Yi stood out in the student category at the art initiative led by Filamen, a new media art collective renowned for curating some of Malaysia’s most celebrated digital art exhibitions.

Chong took home RM5,000 while Loh received RM2,500 during the award presentation ceremony on Oct 28, a press release from the institution read.

The Epson Judges Award went to Lim Khai Shiuam, who was rewarded with RM2,500 for his effort.

The competition also saw works by students from Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Rangsit University International College (Thailand) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (Malaysia) projected onto the facade of the Malaysia Tourism Centre (MaTiC) in Kuala Lumpur from Oct 20 to 29.

MaTiC, an 88-year-old historic building with colonial architectural design, was transformed into a vibrant canvas of light and storytelling with the heritage-themed 3D projection mappings.

Chong’s winning masterpiece, dubbed “Harmonising Diversity”, celebrated the beauty of Malaysia’s multiracial society and the richness of the country’s traditions.

Loh, whose “Opera Odyssey” brought to life the four divine beasts of Chinese mythology, rekindled the audience’s interest in Chinese opera.

“I was inspired by the once-famous art of traditional Chinese opera. So, I took this opportunity to shine the light on the lesser-known facets of Malaysia’s heritage that were once an important representation of our stories,” she said.

Thanking his lecturers for their help, Lim said he faced many technical issues trying to project “Edible Realms of Dreams”, his visual of Malaysia’s mouth-watering and diverse food culture, on an entire building.

“I finally managed to pull this off with a lot of research,” he said, adding that it is important to be passionate when creating one’s projects.
