Lessons learnt from kids

Wefie moment: Volunteering at Kampung Teringai proved to be a life-changing experience for Ashikin (left).

Two volunteer teachers share stories of their stints at an urban and rural school and come away feeling gratified.

TWO weeks isn’t a very long time to truly change someone’s life, but it just might be sufficient to leave a small mark which then creates a cascading inspirational effect. I will never forget the cheeky child from 1M at SK Seri Setia Kuala Lumpur. How the boy threw a tantrum throughout my lesson and refused to participate in class. How he screamed at me and fellow volunteers throughout the lesson. I had dreaded going back to that class but I eventually did upon realising that every child deserves the right to learn.
