Australian scholarship

SWINBURNE University of Technology has launched its ‘Next Step’ scholarship, giving one Malaysian student the opportunity for a year of free study in Malaysia delivered by the online centre of excellence, Swinburne Online.

Malaysian students will have access to a global network and high-quality international university undergraduate and postgraduate study options.

Worth up to the value of A$22,000 (RM68,420), the competition is open to Malaysian residents wanting to undertake undergraduate or postgraduate study.

Entrants will be required to submit an online video showcasing their background, career aspirations and reasons they should win.

The winner of the Next Step scholarship will be able to choose from one of 15 undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across the discipline areas of business, social science, design and communications.

Applications will close on Feb 18, 2016, and the winner will be announced on Feb 25.

Postgraduate scholarships

CURTIN University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) offers Higher Degree by Research programmes and research scholarships for eligible Malaysian postgraduate candidates to join the vibrant research communities at the university and conduct advanced research study based on their chosen research areas.

Among the scholarships currently being offered are a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in petroleum engineering to design a cement-based nano particle composition which can resist supercritical CO2 attack during sequestration practices. Another PhD scholarship in petroleum engineering is for the development of a new enhanced oil recovery method and model for high–temperature well stimulation using acid combinations. In the field of geotechnical engineering, a PhD scholarship is being offered for investigation into shear strength and consolidation behaviour of peat treated using microbial induced calcite precipitation. Those interested can e-mail Dr Wong Kwong Soon at wongkwongsoon@curtin.edu.my.

A fourth PhD scholarship in chemical engineering requires the candidate to conduct research to develop a mixed matrix membrane for gas separation. All the PhD scholarships are offered for three-year periods while the MPhil scholarships are for two years. All include complete tuition fee waiver and monthly stipends. The successful candidates will be awarded the same degrees as those from Curtin University in Australia.

Dance contest

SUNWAY University’s Department of Communication and Liberal Arts is organising a dance competition titled FEELosophy Dance Competition at Sunway University’s Jeffrey Cheah Hall on Nov 21.

The competition is to cultivate dance as a free form of arts among Malaysians and to promote healthy lifestyles among students.

Dancers interested in the competition can register as a team with no more than eight people. A registration fee of RM50 is charged for each team.

Competition winners stand a chance of winning RM1,000 and certificates.

Kerala symposium

THE Global Malayalee 2015 (TGM 15) to be hosted by the All Malaysia Malayalee Association (AMMA), will be held from Nov 27 to 29.

Apart from celebrating the achievements of Malayalees from around the world, the event aims to raise proceeds that will go towards the education of underpriviliged children. It will also look into the socio-economic needs of the community. Malayalees from around the world will come together to interact, share and appreciate the richness of their south Indian culture, language and traditions.

The event will commence with a Symposium of Global Achievers who include Dr Shashi Tharoor, a prominent Indian MP, writer, author and former diplomat, philanthropist and businessman M.A. Yusuff Ali of Lulu International Group, and humanitarian extraordinaire Uma Preman.

Local VIPs include former judge Tan Sri V C George and corporate figure Tan Sri Ravindran Menon.

There will be a star-studded night of glamour that will be graced by big names in the Malayalam entertainment industry on the second day. The third day will see a Kerala Festival and open house featuring a traditional Kerala lunch called Sadhya. It is open to all Malaysians and tourists intrigued by the Kerala experience for a nominal fee of RM20.

THE search is on for 20 of the world’s brightest conservationists between the ages of 18 and 25, to join the first ever Youth Forum for People and Wildlife.

Convened by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), the Youth Forum will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, in September next year.

Meet on science and maths

THE Sixth International Conference on Science and Mathematics Education 2015 (CoSMEd 2015) will be held from tomorrow to Nov 19 at Seameo Recsam in Penang.

The theme is “Revitalising Science and Mathematics Teaching and Learning Culture towards Sustainable Living”.

Educators and researchers are expected to discuss and address issues on improving science and mathematics instructions for the 21st century.

Conference strands include Teaching and Learning Practices, Pedagogical Innovation, Teachers’ Professional Development, Assessment and Evaluation, STEM Education across Context and Equity and Equality in Education.

Industry talk

The IMU Institute for Research, Development and Innovation is organising an industry talk on “Clinical Research and Life Science Ecosystem: Education and Training Opportunities”.

Charity fun run

TUNKU Abdul Rahman University College together with Yayasan CNI are organising “Plant a Tree, Plant a Hope” Batik Sarong Charity Fun Run 2015 on Nov 22.
