Lions help 10 to hear again

I can hear cars passing by and I can hear a lot of hammering. It’s very noisy,” said 25-year-old Ho Foong Choang.

Ho, an assistant facilitator at the Community Service Centre for the Deaf (CSCD), was one of the 10 people chosen by the Lions Club of KL South to receive Siemens’ hearing aids.

The hearing aids were presented at the Gnosis Professional Hearing Service outlet in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI), Kuala Lumpur, and the sounds that Ho was hearing came from the shop next door that was undergoing renovation work.

“I did try using hearing aids when I was younger but it didn’t work very well for me,” said Ho, who had minimal hearing in both ears.

Lions Club of KL South hearing, speech and work with the deaf district chairman Gina Kuek said they worked together with the CSCD to identify the recipients of the aids.

“We also sent them to Gnosis to conduct a full hearing test before they receive the hearing aids,” said Kuek.

The event also marked the opening of Gnosis Professional’s 12th hearing centre at No 90, Jalan Burhanuddin Helmi in TTDI.

Present at the opening were TTDI Residents Association chairman Datuk Abdul Latif Mohd Som and Lions Club District Governor Lion Dr J.P. Kamalanathan.

Gnosis Professional Hearing Service is one of the largest providers of hearing aids in Malaysia, operating out of 12 centres in the Malaysia.

The new Gnosis centre joins the other 11 in offering free hearing assessments or 30-minute hearing checks to anyone worried about their hearing — this is a quick and convenient test which lets you know whether you need any further assessment.

The centre has been welcomed because waiting times on the National Health Service for hearing tests can take up to three to four weeks.

According to a report by the Social Welfare Department of Malaysia, hearing loss is the third highest registered disability in Malaysia.

This number increases every year and thousands go unrecorded.

Professional Hearing Service Centres offer a wide variety of behind-the-ear and in-the-ear hearing aids that are less noticeable and more cosmetically appealing.

The centre’s service also includes a comprehensive aftercare package.

Centres and service points are located across Malaysia in major cities, NHS Hospital Audiology Departments and private hospitals.

The new centre is also offering consultation for people already wearing hearing aids and need their hearing or hearing aids checked or wish to find out about new technology.
